The Art

Working out of her home studio in the Shenandoah Valley near Winchester VA, Carol creates one-of-a-kind artisan jewelry pieces out of fused glass, metals, and fire.

Glass fusing is heat manipulation by a very slow, controlled kiln-baking of glass in order to change the molecular structure of the glass itself. The pieces first "slump" together and then fuse (at about 1450°F) to form into a solid piece.

In many pieces, Carol combines plain glass with compatible dichroic glass. The dichroic glass gives her pieces the radiant depth so particular to this art media. Dichroic glass has long been used by astronomers to refract and transmit light simultaneously.

Some recent works have incorporated butane brazing of copper. Carol experiments with a variety of materials and heat sources in an ever-evolving creative process. "You don't have to have a strong chemistry background," she says,"but it helps."

In addition to creating artisan jewelry for day-to-day and special occasion wear, Carol also produces elaborate artistic works. Her work has been juried into:

  • Athfest (Athens, GA)
  • The Big Red Apple Festival (Cornelia, GA)
  • The Annual Juried Exhibit at the Blue Ridge Arts Center (Seneca, SC)
  • The Annual Juried Show of the Anderson Art Center (Anderson, SC)
  • Founders Day Festival (Tallulah Falls, GA)
  • Butler's Gallery of Art (Clayton, GA)
  • Wine & Craft Festival (Front Royal, VA)
  • Festival of Leaves (Front Royal, VA)
In January 2015, Carol was the North Georgia Art Guild's featured artist in the Georgia Mountain Laurel magazine.
